Topic: Avoiding Homophobic artists

Does anyone else avoid listening to, watching, or showing support for artist/actors/etc. that are known to be homophobic?

Re: Avoiding Homophobic artists

I consider myself to be a fan of a little bit of every genre of music. I have not listened to them very often, but comments made by artist like Usher, 50 Cent, and Eminem, make me reconsider ever listening to their work and I question their motives. Although these artists do fit into the often considered homophobic genre of rap/hip hop music, a huge advocate in the same field is Kanye West. He has in the past been very vocal of supporting the LGBT community and I also do happen to like the work he produces. ---Too bad his other controversies often overshadow his music and issues he stands up for.

I take homophobic comments very seriously.  I don't like people who look for "hot topics" to project their feelings at. If you can't own your anger or lack of self-esteem I'm not going to let you project it on me.

There are times however that a celebrities words are taken out of context and the media posts what it thinks will make great headlines. Look at what happened to Ellen. She was asked by Kelly Osborne what she thought of 2 women dancing together on DWTS and Ellen was quoted as saying “I think it’s weird,”. This is where the media cut off the rest of the answer. Ellen actually continued to answer and clarified “I think that’s great that they’re going to do that." That last quote was left out of the tabloids.

There was a big commotion about this misquote. Can you image how much bigger it would have been if it had of been a straight celebrity that the media misquoted??

This is one of the many reasons why I prefer to do a little research on the matter before (or even if) I decide that I may pull my support for a musician, actor, comedian, politician, etc.
